If not me, who? And if not now, when? This quote ties into the decision that Rosa Parks made in 1955, which was one of the seeds that birthed the Civil Rights Movement. This quote also is one that I have heard numerous times and is the definition of my purpose for creating this magazine.
Purpose is not just for entertainment purposes but, to educate—to enlighten and elevate the minority student population. This medium will create the path for students of color to realize their purpose and leave here with more than just a degree. To help you take advantage of the abundant knowledge that this campus holds and that you do have access to. I REPEAT; YOU DO HAVE ACCESS! Know that the classroom is not the only place you can gain knowledge. You dictate who and where you learn from. This is your motivation to create your own opportunities for change. Do not wait on anyone else – do it now!
Mrs. Parks did and look at the doors that opened. I choose to do the same, and many doors will open for me.
With that said, I hope you enjoy our first issue. It took a lot to get to this point, and I am eager to see what’s next. Spread the word; take your copy home; to work; to Ann Arbor—show them how Spartans do!
In this issue we will take you back to the pioneers of MSU. Also, you can read about the website you spend countless hours on everyday—Facebook. Finally, out of love and appreciation we dedicate our inaugural issue to the late Mrs. Rosa Parks. From the staff here at Purpose, I say thank you.
