Freshman freedom means getting that piercing you always wanted -- maybe by Bridgette Gregory
Coming to college at MSU for the first time is exhilarating. No parents, no rules, you are on your own for the first time ever. How do you test this new found independence? Well, Laurel decided to get a piercing, a percing called the Monroe, named after Marilyn Monroe. The “Monroe” piercing is meant to resemble a beauty mark in between the top lip and the nose. It is also referred to as the “Madonna.” Laurel said that she has “wanted this piercing for about two years now…then I got here and I’m 18.” She found a good piercing shop and did extra investigation for what would be necessary for her new piercing. On Tuesday, she came back from class and had what she termed “a face hole.” One of Laurel’s least favorite side effects is “no spicy or salty food.” She has been very meticulous about taking care of her “face hole.” After every meal, she has to rinse her mouth with special mouthwash. The actual piercing was not the hardest part for Laurel. The most grueling part of it was telling her Mom. A couple years ago she asked her Mom if I could get this piercing. "Essentially it amounted to a big no," said Laurel. "She is adamantly against body modification.” For a couple weeks Laurel vacillated about telling her Mom. Finally, she grew a pair and made the phone call. Laurel called the conversation “anti-climatic. Her Mom said just "‘don’t get any other things.’” Laurel is one of the few whose Moms do what is a “verbal equivalent to an eyeroll.” I, on the other hand, would have my financial support ripped from underneath me if I so much as stepped into a tattoo/piercing studio. Laurel’s piercing is finally less red and inflamed. She is planning to get her post changed next week and still loves it. Laurel said, “I don’t regret my decision. I’ve wanted this for long time.” |
