“What have I got myself into?”

This was the question I asked myself as I packed my clothes five hours before I leaving for Orlando, Florida, last January.  I had been accepted to the Walt Disney World College Program for spring of 2006.

It didn’t help that my friends and family kept asking, “Are you sure you want to do this?  It just doesn’t seem like you.”  However, I would soon come to find that the Disney College Program is a unique and incredible experience for any person from any background.

There are two program sessions for which all students of any major are eligible, the fall session thar runs from August to December and spring session from January to May.  Students can also apply for extended programs that overlap seasons.  The internship combines education, work experience and living experience.  Program recruiters give each student a job in an area of the theme parks and then place them with other students in housing that Disney provides.

Besides the pleasure of escaping the freezing temperatures of the Midwest, the program offers several other perks.  You receive free admission into all four theme parks, as well as discounts on merchandise, accommodations and tickets for any visitors. Occasionally, local businesses in Buena Vista (that’s where the college program housing is located) will also offer discounts for Disney team members -- just remember to ask.

Furthermore, having the Walt Disney World Co. as a previous employer on your resume is often impressive.  I can speak from experience because I have my current job as a receptionist at Suburban Ice East Lansing because of my Disney experience.  My boss is a huge Disney enthusiast and after an interview that lasted about ten minutes (most of which he spent reminiscing about his last Disney vacation), I had the job.

Disney also offers networking workshops and career-building activities throughout the program, which are great opportunities to meet and discuss career goals with someone in the field of your interest.  Disney College Program courses also provide assistance with career decisions.  As a graduate of the Marketing You course, I can attest that the class offers valuable assistance in creating a resume, helpful hints for networking and tips on professionalism.

I recommend the Disney College Program to any student who needs a break from the stresses of the typical college lifestyle and who wants to further his or her career.  If you would like to learn more about the program or apply, recruiters will be holding a meeting on the MSU campus in Wells Hall B106 on Monday, October 23rd at 6:00 p.m..  If you have questions, contact Authella Collins Hawks (517) 353-9747.
