Surf's up for Thanksgiving

by Sean Vidal

Surf's upWhile we wait for a lighter shade of grey, Sean will be surfing and sunning. No wonder he has a lot to be thankful for.

“Want to go home with me for Thanksgiving?”

That was the question I have been asked the most for the past two weeks.  Much to the dismay of my friends, my response was always negative. “No, I’m going to fly home for Thanksgiving."

Why wouldn't I want to celebrate Thanksgiving in the greyest state in the nation?  Because, while people are enjoying their Thanksgiving feast in some place like Rockford, Bloomfield, Midland or the UP, I’ll be playing midnight tackle football on the beach, surfing, driving up and down the pacific coastline, going to see my friend’s band play, maybe getting drunk at Disneyland and celebrating my 20th birthday with some of my best friends in the world.

I am from a little town in Orange County, California, called Laguna Niguel that borders Laguna Beach.  I chose to go to an out of state school to separate myself from my family and become more independent.  You might think I’m crazy, but it was to get a change from California as well.

But living in Michigan now has made me appreciate the California climate so much more.  Thus I jump on any opportunity to fly home, see my family and soak up the Socal sun.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year.  Turkey, gravy, stuffing, always tastes special on the fourth Thursday in November.  There is just something about sitting down to dinner with your family (or extended family) at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. It feels good to talk about what you are thankful for in life and to eat so much food all you can do is sit in a recliner to watch football all day long.

Also the great thing about Thanksgiving is that my birthday falls within the same week.  So it’s basically like having two birthdays in one.  If my birthday falls ON Thanksgiving then it‘s heaven in one day.

This year my 20th B-day landed on the day after Thanksgiving. This made my mother decide to help me get in touch with my childhood, so she offered to pay for my friends and meI to go to Disneyland for the day.  I hope I will be able to sneak in some substances in order to spike my $5 Coke to make it actually worth the five bucks I paid for it.

That night, my friends has promised that we will enjoy a $200 keg of Bass ale to celebrate my birthday. And on Saturday I will continue my tradition of watching college football all day long.

I’m traveling on a plane, I’m going to a warmer climate, I get to kick back and relax for the entire weekend, people will cook me food, all my friends will be there, I’m going to a concert and I will be drinking. Sounds like a vacation to me.

NEXT WEEK: Check back and I will give you an update, with photos.
