The Best Damn Coffee in East Lansing: Java House I spent the week traveling about East Lansing in search of the best damn coffee in the area. I debated whether or not I should try another drink and be more adventurous, but I figured a majority of our students on campus are looking for that good-tasting, cheap caffeine buzz. I sampled straight black coffee around East Lansing and compiled a list that may or may not help you choose that best brew in the morning: 5. Espresso Royale They had the best environment to drink coffee in, but their coffee was sub-par at best. I spent $1.38 for a small in what appeared to be a sample-sized cup. The coffee disappointed me. It was hot (the only plus), but it lacked the full-bean flavor and aroma I look for in a good cup of coffee. It was watered down, bland and just plain boring. 4. Sparty’s Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Sparty’s is better that Espresso Royale? Yes, it is. Sparty’s coffee was slightly bitter and left a slightly unpleasant aftertaste, yet at the same time captured the bold, full bean taste I look for. If you’re looking for a quick cup, go here--otherwise keep on reading! 3. Beaner’s I bought a cup of their java on a Wednesday afternoon while studying. I presented their staff on Grand River with a $1.00 off coupon and was fortunate to get a cup for around 85 cents for a large with a caption that said “B Passionate on the side.” Not bad! Their coffee was okay. It was better than the Sparty’s concoction, but not by much. The coffee was at the perfect temp, with a slightly emerging bitter taste. It had the right full-bean flavor, yet still lacked the perfect finish. 2. Starbuck’s Oh yes, next in line…those fun white cups that everyone seems to have implanted on their hand everywhere you go. I was pleasantly surprised after tasting their coffee. It had a strong bold flavor. It wasn’t bitter at all, but it did not touch our number one contender … 1. Java House (located on Grand River, right next to the Jukebox Grill and across the street from 7-11) I walked in and purchased the 99 cent large coffee that was conveniently advertised out in front of the shop. The coffee, to say the least, made my morning awesome. It wasn’t bitter at all. It had the strong full-flavor, rich, bean taste. The coffee was perfectly aromatic, with that sweet finish I had been searching for all week. |
