Put these holidays on your calendar now

Don't forget to wear pink in honor of National Pig Day next March 1 - mark your calendar now!

Short men in green, beer and pinching others may be regular activities for some MSU students, but for most of us, they represent St. Patrick’s Day.

However, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t the only gold at the end of the rainbow this month. While many people at least wear green on St Patrick’s Day, regardless of whether they are clueless about who St. Patrick was, few students wore pink for the holiday that passed right by them March 1 - National Pig Day. This festive day was created in 1972 in honor of those bacon-yielding barn yard animals - just one of the many holidays that go uncelebrated each year.

Already this year students have missed opportunities to National Trivia Day, National Clean Off Your Desk Day and National Pharmacists Day. They came and went without even one paper clip necklace or prescription drug party. And though most of the non-Irish had a round of green beer, chances are that when Seward’s Day rolls around March 30 (honoring the purchase of Alaska ), there won’t be any ceremonial dog sled races or igloo-building contests for the occasion.

And that’s just scratching the surface of all the holidays we are missing out on. Rubber Eraser Day on April 15 might as well be erased, along with National Tap Dance day on May 25. October 16 boasts not just one but two holidays: Dictionary Day for all those Webster enthusiasts and Ether Day celebrating those anesthesiologists (that is, if we remember then afterward).

Students could p-aRR-ty with there mateys on Talk Like a Pirate Day September 19 and Jimmy Jones could have a special in honor of November 22, which is National Sandwich day. (And for those Atkins Dieters, National Low-Carb Wrap Day could be the alternative). Plus, if you eat too much on national sandwich day, you can always work it off on National Bike to Work Day next May.

Why aren’t we acknowledging all these other fun holidays? Sure some of these may seem ridiculous, but there are also some important holidays that don’t even make most calendars. MSU closed for the day to honor Martin Luther King Day and an honoree cake made of his face displayed in the West Circle Cafeteria, but for Harriet Tubman Day, March 10, there wasn’t even one underground railroad cookie. Then there are all these other holidays that designed not for celebration but to raise awareness. Women’s Equality Day August 26, Stop the Violence Day November 22 and National Coming Out Day on October 11, just to name a few. None of these holidays made the average calendar.

So keep these holidays (important and just for fun) in mind. Yes, now that you know about all these holidays, it can be overwhelming to remember and acknowledge them. But relax, it’s easier than you think. You’ve already started.

Today is National Go to Spartanedge.com day, after all.
