The State News Controversy

State News media monopoly?

That $5 fee you pay each semester for The State News generates at least a half-million dollar subsidy each year (click here for the calculations). Yet the non-profit campus newspaper also wants a monopoly on the best reporters, editors and photogaphers. All staffers must sign a contract saying they won't write for other campus media or risk being fired.

Efforts to persuade the newspaper to change this monopolistic policy have so far failed. So we are bringing the debate to you. Here are three Open Letters to The State News from:

  • Purpose Magazine - Adviser Sandra Combs Birdiett writes: "It has been brought to my attention that The State News’ editorial managers have chosen a discriminatory policy concerning who can write for the independent, off-campus but MSU student-funded newspaper. Essentially, SN is taxing staffers and readers of Purpose Magazine without giving them representation in the paper and on the news staff." . . . more
  • Spartan Weekly - Editor Matt Lieber writes: "You're [The State News] in the key position to be the media leader, but it seems you'd rather lock yourselves in your new clubhouse and not let anyone else come in and play." . . . more
  • SpartanEdge.com - Publisher Bonnie Bucqueroux writes: ". . . your mistake lies in seeing publications that complement yours as your competitors." . . . more
