March Concert Previews

Need a spring break activity? Add some Gogol Bordello to your life. Thost gypsy punks and others will be enlightening Michigan music fans throughout the month. Don't forget the tunes to the right!

3/3 Gogol Bordello @ Royal Oak Music Theater

New York City's favorite gang of musical misfits will be stopping by Royal Oak on their lengthy U.S. spring tour. One can't help but dance like a gypsy when they hear these eastern-European-inspired tunes...especially fans of Borat! If you miss them here, they'll also be at the Rothbury Festival in July.

3/4 The Most Serene Republic @ Pike Room at the Crofoot

I'm guessing that TMSR hopes to show the world that they are worthy of being called a "Canadian indie rock band." The fact that that phrase even means anything shows how upside-down this decade has become. TMSR's style is definitely one-of-a-kind, but some claim that they've shaped that style too narrowly. Either way, it's exhilirating. They're also appearing at Calvin College in Grand Rapids on March 5.

3/5–3/9 Metro Times Blowout 11

The eleventh (....what???) celebration of Michiganian music takes place at various venues across Detroit for this early spring four-day weekend. Our states most promising indie act of late, Thunderbirds Are Now!, will play Saturday night, while Great Lakes Myth Society are lined up for Friday night. If you get the chance, have a listen to Deastro at the Painted Lady, 1:00 am Friday night. The whole thing only costs you $20. Hey, that's cheaper than a plane ticket to Florida for Spring Break! Go to www.metrotimes.com/blowout for more info.

3/19 The Raveonettes @ Magic Stick

This show will have a whole lot of reverb and possibly way too much charisma for a space as tiny as the Magic Stick. On that other hand, that means you won't be able to avoid being sucked into their alluring, "Lust"-y Danish rock. If there's one thing that the Raveonettes are, it's dependable.

3/19 Justice, Diplo, Fancy @ Royal Oak Music Theater

The Facebook event for this show describes it as something like "a sh*t show waiting to happen." I think that sounds about right. And honestly, how many times in your life can you tell your friends you're going to see a French house group perform in Royal Oak? Probably once in eternity. Start polishing your moves – this is gonna get rowdy.

3/29 Stars @ The Crofoot

Although the congretation of Toronto indie masters seems to have cooled off with the hiatus/side projects of Broken Social Scene and a lackluster 2007 album from this band (it wasn't really that disappointing – it just wasn't Set Yourself On Fire), Stars are still a good time on stage. And we all need to check out this new Pontiac venue. It's a major development for the Detroit area music scene.

3/29 NOMO @ Blind Pig

These afro-jazz Wolverines deserve more than to be written off as Maize and Blue sissies. They do blow – that is, they blow out exquisite tunes with their trumpets and trombones and saxophones. Alright, enough of the rival bashing. There's no denying that these folks have talent. It's actually surprising that they haven't stepped further out of obscurity since their snazzy 2006 album.
