Layer me some Lacoste

by Jordan Barnes

In my high school, almost no one wore Lacoste. By the time I made it to campus in the fall of 2005, it was everywhere. Kids from my town were hanging up their seagulled polo shirts and going with the gator.

Now we know Lacoste is here to stay. Everyone and their father is wearing Lacoste and now those shirts you paid $72 to stand out as a fashion-forward fellow simply makes you look like one of the crowd. But, never fear, there are an ample amount of simple ways to take your Lacoste to the next level this spring.

1. Double Stuffed

Layer two Lacoste polos together. Pink is a good for the undershirt since it’s losing popularity as the main statement. For spring, wear two bright colors that compliment each other, like pink and yellow.

2. Get the Blues

Use your Lacoste as a base color and pick pieces of different hues of the same color to go with it. For instance, layer a darker blue polo with a light blue and white striped dress shirt with a blue patterned tie. Keep the polo unbuttoned and roll up your sleeves to keep it casual.

3. Get Shorty

Wear your Lacoste with a short-sleeved collared button down. The button-down can be solid colored, where the same rules apply as to #1, or get creative with a stripped, plaid or gingham patterned shirt.

4. Back to Basics

If you own a basic color polo like black, brown, grey or white, you can give it a little more personality by layering it with a bright colored T-shirt underneath.

5. Quarter, Too

Layer your Lacoste with a thin ¾-length T-shirt or Henley for a super-casual look that says, “Hey, I picked this out without my mom’s help.”

Although it seems a lot of people have Lacoste shirts, they might not own many. A good trick is to wait for the Lacoste semi-annual sales that usually take place some time in July and either in December or January. That way the $72 shirts only cost around $54.
