Defense key to Bears' Super Bowl win

Mike hopes for another Super Bowl Shuffle for Da Bears

Well, James, you have to got to be an even bigger fool to think that the Colts are going to win the Super Bowl.

May I borrow from your argument real quick?  “Defense wins championships.”  That makes my point right there, but I’ll elaborate for all you single-minded ‘I love Payton’ readers out there; the Colts’ offense is struggling, and they are going up against the best defense in the game.  I don’t care who you are, Brian Urlacher will pick you up and tear you apart like you’re a Thanksgiving turkey.  The simple fact of the matter is that the Colts have proven they’re struggling to put up points in this post-season (think five field goals, no touchdown performance against Baltimore) and Lovie Smith is going to be all over Indy’s game plan.

Peyton Manning isn’t going to lead his team to the Promised Land because of his performance this year, which is going to continue.  All of this talk about how it’s his game is true; it’s his to lose.  The way he’s played this post-season, with the exception of the second half against the Patriots, has been Un-Peyton like, and I don’t see it stopping on Sunday.  He’s got the whole world watching him, and he’s going to snap.  He couldn’t get his team to find the end zone in over a complete game!  All the awards and records don’t mean a thing if he continues to choke this post-season, which he will.

Rex Grossman is due for a big game.  His confidence should be at an all-time high, because you know what?  His team got him to the Super Bowl whether he played well or not.  His team won the games even when he wasn’t performing like he should.  Grossman knows that he has the world’s best defense supporting him, a defense that is capable of scoring enough points themselves that he wouldn’t even need to step foot on the field.  That’s like going into a war knowing you’re protected by an impenetrable bubble; you won’t be scared.  Rex will get the job done, because all of the pressure on the QB position going into this game is on the NFL’s poster boy, leaving a diamond in the rough the space to make a name for himself.

While we’re on the subject of having no fear, I should probably straighten out the fact that the Bears are going to go deep early, go deep often, and go deep all night long.  The Colts defense will not be able to stop a deep threat passing attack for a quarterback with no fear, and spreading the field will open up holes the size of the Grand Canyon for the double threat of running backs Cedric Benson and Thomas Jones, some of the best in the game.  I’m not sold on the Colts defense as of late; they had a big game against Kansas City to shut down Larry Johnson, but have faced no solid rushing attacks since.  The Kansas City game was almost a month ago; can the Colts defense still have a miraculous defensive performance against the running game?  Don’t forget about how horrendous the Colts rush defense was the entire regular season; they were dead last in total rushing yards allowed and yards allowed per game.

Ad to the fact that last time the Bears won the Super Bowl, they did the Super Bowl Shuffle, and I want to see another one…who doesn’t?>

Last but not least, James, you want some intangibles?  I got two words for you: Devin Hester.  NFL record for kick returns for touchdowns means that Adam Vinatieri has to kick two field goals for every time Hester runs a kick off back against him.  The Bears’ special teams is going to be the difference maker, not a clutch field goal kicker…he won’t even be called upon, because DA BEARS ARE BRINGING THE LOMBARDI BACK TO CHICAGO.

Bears 17, Colts 7 in a tightly fought match with Da Bears big D coming out on top

Given the unpredictable nature of the Super Bowl, Michael recommends that you decide for yourself who will win the Super Bowl, because we have no idea what we are talking about.  Or do we?  I’ll tell you on Monday morning.  I also by no means endorse the Bears, because let’s face it…Peyton’s pretty good.
