Dammit, it's not alternative, it's indie: The Hard Lessons by Ben Tipton
If you happened to walk in just when The
Hard Lessons started their set at Mac’s Bar on Friday,
you would have to be dead not to feel the electricity that ran through
the house. Dressed in black and white, The Hard Lessons,
anchored by the Anvil on drums and co-headed by “resident sexy” keyboard-vocalist
Koko Louis and Auggie on “rock your sox” guitar, didn’t
come to play a concert; they came to entertain and put the sweat and
energy back into rock and roll show. Their first song, “Carey Says (Alright!),” set the audience
on fire. As Koko and Auggie chanted the lyrics back and forth,
the ground shook as people jumped up and down. Koko strutted her
stuff later in the set when the band treated the audience to a forthcoming
track off of their next album entitled “For Hours;” she
had me on my knees when she belted out her part on the mic. Auggie equally impressed me, practically jumping
into the audience and playing bottle-neck style guitar in the tradition
of the Delta. After
I thought I couldn’t be wowed anymore, the band paid homage to
Neil Young, closing with a rendition of “Hey, Hey, My, My.” This band exemplifies the energy, desire and
attitude that rock is supposed to embody. The Hard Lessons music shows
that they love the audience as much as we love them. A statement
of appreciation out of their Wise Up release proves their dedication: “WE ARE YOUNG…we are older and wiser, too. These songs are dedicated to the people we’ve met from all across the globe…the kids who remembered rock n’ roll…and those who never forgot. Thank you for your support. Class is in session.
