VALENTINE'S DAY: A great way to learn about love

Happy Valentine's Day!

Jess & Mick

So Valentine’s Day is a pretty good holiday.  I have not always had this attitude about it though.  I’ve been dumped on Valentine’s Day, been dumped a couple days before and so forth and so on.  So, as you can tell, I haven’t always been too fond of this random “couple’s” holiday.  This is what I call my Valentine’s Day Epiphany.

But this year, something changed.  It’s not that I need Valentine’s Day, necessarily approve of it as a Hallmark holiday (I think we should celebrate St. Valentine and what he stood for) or because I have a boyfriend, but I think everyone deserves at least one good Valentine’s Day.

Although Pam says that a couple in love should express it everyday and I do believe this as well, Valentine’s Day is a guy’s excuse to not look like a fool walking through town with a bouquet of flowers for no reason.  Most of the time they are asked, “So what did you do this time?  What are you apologizing for?”  Society doesn’t accept the fact that guys can, and should, do romantic things randomly.

It allows guys to be romantic.  Not every guy expresses his love everyday for his girlfriend or wife in a sense of flowers or chocolate.  When he is romantic, he is considered a sappy loser.  Women feel there is nothing wrong with this, but in relation to “the guys,” men feel like an outcast.  If the guy is shy, this is a good excuse for him to make a move, too.

After several years of being married or even dating, Valentine’s Day can get old, but I still think it is what you make it.  If you feel that you’re miserable on a holiday like that, then that’s your fault.  You are in control of being happy.  What, do you want a holiday called Not-Getting-Laid Day, where you’re buying cards and giving them to people saying, “Congratulations, you’re single and unhappy”?

In addition, every year, no matter my age, my parents and some of my best friends and I have exchanged Valentine’s Day gifts, no matter our relationship status.  The way we figure it is it’s all about being fortunate enough to have someone in your life that cares about you, in my case family and friends.

So for all you out there that think Valentine’s Day is just a stupid holiday or can’t accept that love is all around us (thank you to “Love Actually” for talking about it), think again.  Valentine’s Day isn’t all about being disgusting and gross with your significant other; it’s about appreciating those that are important in your life, even if they happen to be the one you go to bed with every night.
