Dantonio announces picks

Michigan State head Coach Mark Dantonio announced the newest members of the football team on National Signing Day in front of fans at the Breslin Center.

Dantonio was able to use his clout in the Midwest, especially in Ohio to snag some recruits that had originally committed to play for him at Cincinnati. In all, 20 recruits made up the Spartan class of 2007. Of those 20, seven are from Michigan and six are from Ohio.

Dantonio says, “This is just the beginning.” His first draft class as a head coach seems to be built around speed and toughness, something that could help the Spartans in the near future. With speedy receivers who can get down the field, the Spartans might have a formidable scoring threat especially if they can get more than one guy open.

Some of the noteworthy Spartan signings include:

Quarter Back Kirk Cousins (Holland, MI)

At Holland Christian High School, Cousins threw for 2000 yards and 28 touchdowns in his senior season. He holds 35 high school passing records. Dantonio says that Cousins reminds him of Drew Brees.

Wide Receiver B.J. Cunningham (Westerville, OH)

One of several talented recivers that Dantonio recruited this year, Cunningham has a lot of speed and ability to make spectacular catches. Dantonio describes him as “explosive and a big body with good body control.”

Wide Receiver- Mark Dell (Farmington Hills, MI)

Michigan State seems to have a knack for luring players from a school with one of Michigan’s premier football programs to come and play here. Drew Stanton and Agim Shabaj both played at Harrison and were recruited by John L. Smith. PrepStar rated Dell the number one receiver in the Midwest.

Tight End Kevin Pickelman (Marshall, MI)

The 240-pound Pickelman is a very physical player who has the ability to knock people out. He should provide a very good blocking presence for the Spartans when it comes time to play.
