First, I think the best thing to do for the debut of this column will be to state my purpose. I want to set things straight and inform everyone that there is no such thing as underground music. In most cases, it’s probably indie, short for independent.

Normally, groups like this are signed to a small independent label and record and produce what they want. In most cases there is a ridiculous amount of talented musicians you haven’t heard of just because the commercial record companies have total control over what hits the radio. So here is your chance to learn about those INDEPENDENT acts that none of your friends have heard of.

This week’s band is called Radio Moscow. Hailing from the great state of Iowa to play psychedelic rock-blues in the face of any eager listener, Radio Moscow is a fresh slap in the face to all of the pop-emo kids on MTV U. The band is releasing its first record at the end of this month and it’s worth checking out.

Frontman Parker Griggs pays homage to the likes of Muddy Waters and Jimmy Hendrix, especially on “Deep Blue Sea,” where he howls and sweats about a love lost. The motor behind this blues-rock piece are Zach Anderson on bass and Keith Rich on drums. Other notable tracks include “Timebomb” and “Frustrating Sound,” where the boys really strut their stuff.

Punctuated by rolling beats and Grigg’s lengthy solos, Radio Moscow is sure to please any fuzzed-out guitar lover. Up until a few months ago, Radio Moscow didn’t even have a drummer; Parker would pre-record the beat on a 2-track to suffice in Keith’s place during performances. The music is raw, heartfelt, unpolished and, most importantly, it’s original. The band is just starting touring and they’re making sure that you know how to find Iowa on a map.
