The streets of New York City are crowded, filled with people attempting to shop for the Christmas season.  Couples flood Central Park and businessmen storm Wall Street.  Festive buyers stroll around Manhattan, going out to dinner and enjoying the sights and sounds.  Among those faces last week was Eric Gregory.  He flew out to New York to be a guest star on the Montel Williams show.  This episode, called Ending Violence: A Crisis in America (click for details), will be aired on Friday, Dec. 8 at 9 a.m. on WLNS, Channel 6 News-Lansing.

Gregory, a senior majoring in political science and constitutional theory, recently ran for state representative in the 41st district of Michigan.  Williams wanted to find a young man involved in politics to offer his viewers a fresh perspective and he chose Gregory.

Gregory left for New York on an early flight last week, with his airfare and hotel paid for by the show. He spent a leisurely day sightseeing and visiting old friends.  “It was nice to come back and ride the subway,” said Gregory.  “Basically, sightseeing and eating.”

Montel Williams hosts a daily talk show, which will feature MSU student Eric Gregory

Last Friday, the show was filmed before a live audience.  The discussion was between a lady from CNBC, Williams and Gregory.  The lady from CNBC, Sylvia, just like Gregory, attended Cranbrook Kingswood in Bloomfield Hills.  Gregory found himself conversing with her about how they were both from Michigan and found several common interests.  “It was all pretty normal for me,” said Gregory.  “I tried to ignore the camera.  It’s a talk show, so I just talked to the people.”

Featuring him for about 15 minutes, Gregory received questions ranging from the basic politics to the recent shootings in the Bronx.  Asking questions specifically related to Gregory, Williams asked about the voters’ reactions to Gregory running for state representative, the upcoming term based on election results in Michigan and what actions could be taken to remedy racial incidents.  “It was really a hodge podge of various things,” said Gregory.

Behind the scenes, according to Gregory, he was treated extremely well.  When they had him in the green room, the staff made sure he was at home as possible.  “The producers and the staff members visit,” he said, “bringing you whatever you need.  It was a nice atmosphere, but a bit hurried.”

Not feeling the list bit intimidated, Gregory was very excited to be on national television.  “It’s always good to go on a well recognized show to express and promote viewpoints and get ideas out there,” said Gregory.
