Nick Meador III. Top 10 Music Videos of 2007 Long-gone are the days of MTV (or any television channel) hosting music videos. Today, music videos reach viewers via the Internet. Here are the most entertaining ones I found in 2007.
10. Sondre Lerche – Phantom Punch : During a phone interview last spring, I asked Sondre how this video came to be. He said they had a contest on Norwegian radio (his homeland), and the winner got to direct the music video. Basically, a Michel Gondry fan had the time of his life.
9. Feist – 1,2,3,4 : Everyone and their uncle's grandmother's dog's nephew is now a Feist fan, thanks to those jerks at Apple who turned this into an iPod commercial. And all the heartbroken indie boys sighed once more...
8. The Postmarks – Goodbye : The strongest female-led indie pop outfit of the year needed a soft, crayon-drawn video to go with their lead single. Nice choice, indeed.
7. Animal Collective – Fireworks : Who doesn't love flashy audio/visual spectacles? There's also an underlying connection between Animal Collective's rule-breaking antics, and the tie between fireworks and freedom (during the Fourth of July, that is).
6. Beach House – Master of None : The original, low budget video for this song is the first of two made by Beach House. It's arguably more appropriate to their dreamy, inimitable style than the subsequent, more professional one.
5. M.I.A. – Jimmy : This video was clearly influenced by the old Bollywood flick, but this one is still enthralling and mildly funny.
4. Annuals – Carry Around : A delightful pairing of exquisite greenery and Annual's ornamental music. This is so much sweeter than your average backyard croquet course.
3. Submission for Les Savy Fav’s contest for “The Equestrian,” starring Bunny : This one walks the fine line between playtime with toddler, and child abuse. At least Bunny seems to be having a good time, despite the fact that the song is untimely.
2. Of Montreal – Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse : Kevin Barnes is the mascot for the ADD-generation. Robin Hood ain't got shit on him.
1. Simian Mobile Disco – Hustler : Nothing wins over hearts like a circle of lovely, lip-locking, teenage French femmes. The brilliance of this video is that it seems entirely possible -- and it makes you wonder why this never happened when you played Telephone. Questions or Comments?
